Return to the office or return to the past?

While most employees are happy with the new way of working, the hybrid work model creates new challenges for workplace leaders and HR.

A complete return to the office is almost unthinkable

We will probably never go back to the way it was before the pandemic. Even though hybrid working isn’t new, and happened before 2020 as well, it is now more normal than ever. This brings new challenges for workplace leaders and HR.

Challenges for workplace leaders & HR

Expensive building, but no occupation

While you still pay for that great office, the average of occupation is only 25%. Which means that 75% of the time, your office is empty.

Lose sense of leadership

When employees work wherever they want, it can be hard to still feel ‘in control’ and know what your people are doing.

3 tips that might help to get your employees back to the office

1. Do NOT push employees to return to the office

While you may think it is helpful to make force employees to work at the office 80% of their workweek, this is not the best approach. For every company forcing workers to return to the office, another company lets them work where they wish. So, if you want to keep your talent, do not force them.

2. Create an office worth coming back to

Hybrid working is especially interesting because they can work in another environment every day. This brings creativity and helps with productivity. Create an office that can do the same! With different places where they can work, that are appealing and feel comfortable, and good coffee, there is no reason for employees to work in café instead of in the office.

3. Invest in good collaboration tools

Once people come back to the office you need to make sure the tools in the office are better that they are at home or somewhere else. There will still be hybrid meetings. Let them use equipment that makes them feel like they are still face-to-face. Help employees stay connected and productive, wherever they are.

Technology to support hybrid workplaces

In a hybrid office setup, occupancy becomes less predictable. It also tends to vary more widely during the week. Under these circumstances, smart workplace technologies – and the data derived from them – provide much-needed support.

To begin with, they help organizations quickly identify and adapt to new work patterns. In addition, they help employees navigate the flexible workplace environment thanks to IoT real-time data. Furthermore, they inform hybrid workplace (re)design strategies, enabling companies to create workspaces that support people’s well-being as well as their productivity.

In short, smart workplace technologies and analytics support businesses to effectively shift from pandemic workplace disruption to post-pandemic flexibility and resilience.
